At St Andrews, we are committed to identifying and supporting any children who are young carers. This year, we were presented with two awards – one from Salford Young Carers and one from the Children’s Society – to reflect the work that we have done for young carers at our school
The official definition of a young carer is ‘…a person under 18 who provides or intends to provide care for another person’.
Being a young carer has a lot of positives – children are often very close to the person they care for, they gain many skills and are responsible and hardworking. However, young carers often miss out on opportunities that other children have because they care for family members who are disabled or chronically ill, or for adults who are misusing alcohol or drugs.
At St Andrews, we recognise the added responsibility that being a young carer brings, and how this can sometimes affect their attendance and school work. When we identify young carers, we ensure that they are supported well within the school so that they are able to achieve their full potential, whilst still carrying out their important caring role.
If you think you are a young carer, or if you know someone who is, you can contact me, Grace Thomas, for further help and advice. You can contact me through the school office on 01617903194
